ENGAGE is the 5th element of the M.A.R.V.E.L. Method. ENGAGEMENT as used here, refers to various levels of involvement and motivation accompanied by a specific emotional state. We’re engaged in activities and relationships in very different ways, each of which has its own unique accompanying state of attention, motivation and emotion. For example, let’s say you’re a typical multitasking mom. You may be driving the kids to school, talking to hubby on the telephone (with ear piece of course), watching for traffic, trying to remember your shopping list, and looking for a short cut to avoid a traffic jam that you just heard about on the radio. This is one type of engagement. Compare this with comfortable front row seats in a beautiful, artistically lit theater where you are attending the performance of your favorite musical artist. What type of attention, motivation and emotional factors come in to play with this type of engagement?
Your family’s ENGAGEMENT in fitness is something to be considered carefully. The kind of ENGAGEMENT that takes place in fitness at the earlier ages can determine the future motivation for a Positive Fitness Attitude. Young children especially, have a natural drive toward movement, physical activity and play as they learn by exploring their world. The way that you ENGAGE your children in family fitness plays a HUGE role in how they are motivated in the future.
