It took me a lot of years to discover the power of LIMITS and it’s still something that I deal with every day of my life. Most of us are in love with ideas of UNLIMITED human potential, being all that we can be and the sky is the limit type of thinking. These ideas are all well and good , but with one underlying catch. LIMITS create the foundation for maximizing one’s full UNLIMITED potential. Here’s one way to think about the concept of LIMIT. As humans, we have biological “hardwiring” that can create a great deal of “mischief” if we don’t understand it. One part of our hardwiring resides in the architecture of our brain. I call it our trilateral brain because it has two sides and three levels. Each of the two sides and three levels serve different integrated functions. But that doesn’t always mean that the parts of our trilateral brain that are dominating at any one time are looking out for our best interest.
For example, if I’m upset about something that has just happened with one of my kids, different parts of my brain get activated, and depending on which part dominates at the time, my behavior will vary dramatically. If the emotional part of my brain is dominating, I may be out of control, and even start yelling or screaming. On the other hand, if the thinking part of the brain is dominant, I may look for a calm, cool and collected solution.
Learning to make the kinds of decisions that LIMIT irrational and self destructive thinking takes time and training just like any other area of success. Developing a Positive Fitness Attitude includes training the brain to think positive and to LIMIT negative, impulsive, irrational, self sabotaging emotions. Fitness for the long haul, includes the understanding and use of healthy brain and mind strategies to counter the distractions and external influences that run counter to our health and wellness.
